Alabama Hiking

Looking for a bit of adventure on your vacation? A chance to see the great outdoors in a whole new light? Then Alabama hiking is just what the doctor ordered.

Check out the sights and sounds all over the Alabama country side. From the lake and river side trails, to the hilltops and mountain sides granting you views all across the beautiful landscape.

One the Alabama's greatest organizer, provider, and keeper of these trails is the Alabama Hiking Trail Society. This non-profit organization has operated for many years with a single mission, “to develop, maintain, promote, and protect a continuous public hiking trail… throughout Alabama.”

Since 2001, the group has rapidly been further expanding and maintaining the Alabama Trail, Alabama Trail System, among other smaller loop trails. The two main trails, the Alabama Trail, and Alabama Trail System, run parallel to each other, north to south, providing paths from the furthest reaches north to the very southern tip of the state. The trails range in difficulty on an array of terrain, from woodland environments, to rocky canyons.

One of the most difficult trails known to Alabama hiking and one with the most reward is the Eberhart Trail. The path takes you down into the misty depths of the deepest canyon east of the Mississippi River, where the swift waters of the Little River flow their unending cycle. You'll want to take a picnic as this day hike will be a tiring one at nearly 2 miles, but one well worth it.

If you'd rather your Alabama Hiking adventure be a bit more family oriented, then the Pine Beach Trail along the Gulf Coast region is just what you're looking for. This easy all day hike takes you across 4 miles of the Bon Secour Wildlife Refuge.

Lush pine trees and sandy beaches are the main décor, with beautiful wildlife flowers accenting the occasion. The 6,500 acre refuge is home to over 500 species of birds and animals, so you are sure to see a bit of exotic and magical wildlife. Though lengthy, the trail is an easy one, and there are plenty of places to setup a great family picnic.

The choices are plentiful and you simply can't go wrong with all the options available, but hiking in Alabama is an activity that should not be ignored. With all the choices, the hiking trails of Alabama make a great destination for the whole family on your Alabama Hiking Adventure!
